EASTERN CRESCENT

Alternative Media, People’s Choice

Muslims have always been projected in the media as backward people who are averse to modern progress. Muslim women have been projected as living under male domination and ill-behaved by them.

It is a fact that mainstream media cannot address all the issues for all communities due to its own limitations. Therefore, each one has to have its own vehicle to make sure its moves forward and the issues that are important to them are presented in the proper context. We need to have daily newspapers, digital media platfroms as well as round-the-clock satellite TV channels in English and local languages from Muslims to report accurately on events as they are happening with true and honest spirits.

Muslims are running few newspapers, magazines, and journals; besides some web portals, which are somehow, proving to be effective in raising socio-economic and educational issues as per Muslims’ concern. At the same time, these Muslim magazines are again not so effective in dealing with Islamic issues in a religious context, and even sometimes they present an unsolicited twist to highly sensitive Islamic issues due to their lacking of proper religious education or Islamic practices.

Ulama should respond to the contemporary challenges within mainstream media. It is high time for them to realize that sitting on the sidelines will be ineffective not only for them but also for the generations to come.

Markazul Ma’arif Education & Research Centre (MMERC), Mumbai, therefore, came out with a monthly English magazine ‘Eastern Crescent’, as an ‘Alternative Media, People’s Choice’ and ventured into this field with new strategies to deal with the present brand of media prejudice in May 2006. Eastern Crescent is gaining market each day and is proving to be an effective platform for both mature and armature opinion makers. The magazine shared the top position in the year 2008 among all English publications from Muslims in India in the year-wise review conducted by USA-based twocircles.net.

EC files stories with views through research-based analyses and the conviction of the individual authors. Eastern Crescent is a free media house, owned by Markaz Media and Publications Pvt. Ltd., edited and maintained by a group of mainstream ulama from Mumbai, India. It files reportage and carries views in line with the Constitution of India to promote its secular, democratic, and multi-cultural values among its readers.
